How Big Do Mini Goldendoodles Get? A Simple Size Guide
"How big do Mini Goldendoodles get?" It's one of the first questions families ask me, and it's a great one. Size affects so much, from the car you drive to which end of the couch your puppy will try to claim. In this guide, I'll walk you through what to expect, what shapes a puppy's adult size, and how we help families find the right fit.
At Dainty Doodles, we raise Mini Goldendoodles and Mini Bernedoodles right inside our home in Placer County. After more than 20 years of breeding and training, I've learned that size is a little bit science and a little bit surprise. Here's what I tell every family who asks.
How Big Do Mini Goldendoodles Get When Full Grown?
A Mini Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Our full-grown Mini Goldendoodles usually land somewhere between about 13 and 40 pounds.
That's a wide range, and that's normal. "Mini" isn't one exact size. Some families end up with a compact, lap-sized pup. Others have a sturdier dog who is still easy to lift into the car and fits nicely in a smaller home.
If you're comparing breeds, our Mini Bernedoodles (Bernese Mountain Dog x Poodle) tend to run a bit bigger, at about 15 to 50 pounds. You can read more in our post on Mini Goldendoodles vs Mini Bernedoodles.
What Decides How Big Your Puppy Will Be
No honest breeder can promise an exact adult weight. But a few things give us a pretty good idea of where a puppy will land.
Mom and dad's size. This is the biggest clue. Puppies usually grow up to be somewhere around the size of their parents. You can meet our moms and dads here.
The Poodle side. Mini Goldendoodles get their smaller size from the Poodle side of the family. The size of the Poodles in a puppy's family tree matters a lot.
Generation. Puppies from a few generations of doodles can be a little more predictable in size than a first cross, though every litter still has some variety.
Boy or girl. Boys often end up a little larger than their sisters from the same litter, but not always.
Healthy growth. Good food, steady exercise and regular vet visits help a puppy grow at a healthy pace. Your vet is always the best person to ask about your puppy's weight.
How Fast Do Mini Goldendoodles Grow?
Puppies do most of their growing in the first several months. Those early weeks fly by. One week your puppy fits in a shoebox, and the next they're tugging on your shoelaces.
After that big burst, growth slows down. Many doodles keep filling out through their first year, getting a little fuller in the chest and fluffier in the coat. That coat can make them look bigger than they really are, especially when they're due for a grooming visit!
A few simple tips while your puppy grows:
Weigh your puppy now and then, at home or at the vet, so you can see how they're trending.
Feed a quality puppy food and follow the portion guide, adjusting with your vet's advice.
Keep play gentle on growing joints. Short walks and backyard play are perfect for young puppies.
Call your vet if anything seems off, like a sudden jump or drop in weight.
Is a Mini Goldendoodle the Right Size for Your Family?
Size is about more than pounds. It's really about how a dog fits into your everyday life. Here are a few questions I like families to think about:
Do you live in a house with a yard, or a smaller home or apartment?
Will your puppy ride along on errands and trips?
Do you have little ones who will want to hold and cuddle the puppy?
Do you want a dog who can keep up on longer walks and hikes?
A smaller Mini Goldendoodle can be a sweet fit for a cozy home or a family that's on the go. A larger one may suit active families who love long walks. Both can be wonderful with kids when they're raised with love and good routines.
Many families also love that doodles are low-shedding and often a good fit for allergy sufferers. Every person and every dog is different, so if allergies are a concern, spend some time around doodles before you decide.
How We Help You Pick the Right Puppy
This is where raising puppies in our home really helps. Our puppies grow up inside the house with our kids, the vacuum, the doorbell and all the normal sounds of family life. We get to know each one from day one.
Every litter gets Early Neurological Stimulation and temperament testing. Along with what we learn about each puppy's size and personality, that helps us match the right puppy to the right family, including homes looking for an emotional support or therapy dog.
Our parent dogs are DNA health tested, and every puppy goes home with a head start on potty, kennel and basic training at no extra charge. Once your puppy is home, you're never on your own. We offer lifetime support, so you can reach out with questions about growth or anything else.
Curious when the next litter is coming? Take a look at our upcoming litters and waitlist. Reservations start with a $500 reservation fee, and you'll find all the details on our prices and policies page.
If you have questions about size, temperament or timing, I'd love to hear from you.
Quick answers
How big do Mini Goldendoodles get?
Most of our full-grown Mini Goldendoodles land between about 13 and 40 pounds. The parents' size is the best clue for where a puppy will fall in that range.
Can a breeder tell me exactly how big my puppy will be?
Not exactly. A good breeder can give you a solid estimate based on the parents and the litter, but every puppy grows a little differently.
Are Mini Goldendoodles a good fit for smaller homes?
Many are. Their smaller size and easygoing nature can make them a nice fit for smaller homes, as long as they get daily walks, play and time with their people.
